Cell Phones and Personal Communication Devices

The Georgia Distraction-Free Education Act, HB 340, prohibits the use of personal communication devices such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and headphones in grades K-8 during the school day.  This includes instructional time, breaks, transitions, assemblies, and other school-related activities.  Exemptions may be allowed for students with diagnosed needs for device use. These devices should be kept in the student’s backpacks while at school. For grades 9-12, students are not allowed to use cell phones or other electronic devices (including but not limited to smartwatches, earbuds, headphones) during instructional time, both inside and outside the classroom.  A device storage area will be utilized by all classroom teachers.
