Pickens County School District is proud to share exciting results from the 2025 Georgia Milestones assessments, which measure student learning in grades 3–8 and high school.

Districtwide, students posted increases in the majority of the English Language Arts (ELA), Math and Science measures on the Georgia Milestones, and multiple grade and subject levels outpaced the state average on these high stakes assessments. Those outperforming the state included 3rd grade ELA, 6th grade math, 8th grade Physical Science and 8th grade Algebra at the elementary and middle school level. US History, Algebra, and American Literature at the high school level also performed higher than the state on the End of Course tests. Additionally, other grade and subject levels not only outperformed the state but also our local RESA average. These include 4th grade math at the elementary level and Biology at the high school level. Lastly for the first time in several years, Pickens County School’s 4th grade math scores led the North Georgia area! Tate, Hill City, and Harmony ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectfully in this area out of all neighboring mountain elementary schools. “These gains from the prior school year as well as some of the impressive comparative data demonstrate the hard work of students, the skill and dedication of teachers, and the powerful support of families and the community,” Superintendent Dr. Travis Thomas stated.

Beyond the Georgia Milestones, other key indicators of student success are also on the rise. The district’s projected graduation rate for the Class of 2025 stands unofficially at 95.4%. Also, in Advanced Placement (AP) performance, 63% of PHS AP students earned a score of 3 or higher on the corresponding AP exam — a mark that demonstrates college-level mastery in rigorous coursework.

The Pickens County Board of Education remains steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence. Board members work closely with district leaders to set high expectations, support innovative instructional practices, and provide the resources necessary for students to reach their highest potential. This shared vision for success continues to guide the district’s work and inspire achievement across all schools.

The district will continue to review Georgia Milestones and other student achievement data closely to identify areas of strength and opportunity, tailoring instruction and resources to meet the needs of all learners. The district’s vision is evident, Graduation and life preparation for all, and the goal remains clear – All Pickens County Schools Graduates will be Enrolled, Enlisted, or Employed.
