At 103 years old, Mrs. Jo Edna Niblett has finally received her high school diploma—more than eight decades after putting her education on hold to serve her country during World War II.

During the Pickens High School Class of 2026's Military Enlistee Ceremony on April 29, district leaders and students had the honor of recognizing Mrs. Niblett with an honorary diploma, celebrating a life defined by sacrifice, resilience, and patriotism.

As a young woman during WWII, Mrs. Niblett went to work at Bell Aircraft in Marietta, Georgia, and she became one of our nation’s “Rosie the Riveters,” welding B-29 bombers and contributing to the war effort. Her work—like that of so many women of her generation—helped shape the outcome of the war and redefine the role of women in the workforce.

More than 80 years later, her story came to the attention of Pickens County Schools. The district invited Mrs. Niblett, now residing in a local retirement community, to attend the high school's Military Enlistee Ceremony. What she didn’t know was that she would be the evening’s most celebrated guest.

In a heartfelt and emotional moment, Mrs. Niblett was presented with a Pickens High School diploma, greeted with applause, admiration, and gratitude from those in attendance. “This diploma represents more than academic achievement—it represents a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and strength,” said superintendent Dr. Travis Thomas. “Mrs. Niblett embodies the very best of our community and our country.”

The ceremony, which honors graduating seniors who have chosen to enlist in the armed forces, was a fitting backdrop for recognizing a woman whose contributions to national defense began long before many in the audience were born. And for students preparing to serve our military today, Mrs. Niblett’s story served as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of stepping up in times of need.

At 103, Mrs. Niblett’s legacy continues to inspire—proving that it is never too late to honor those who gave so much for others.
